The Kilim from Kiln project explores the rare process of creating handcrafted bricks from the local clay, and the almost forgotten craft of handloom weaving of traditional Alentejo blankets.

The primary aim of the project is to create a brick floor for communal space at the Oficinas do Convento in Montemor-o-Novo. The brick floor will not only embody the captivating patterns found in Alentejo blankets but will incorporate symbols from Serbian handwoven kilims as well.

The rhombus or diamond pattern, a universal motif prevalent in both blankets and kilims carries special significance. In the context of kilims, it symbolizes the act of gathering around the table, emphasizing togetherness.

The color palette for the brick floor was developed through experimentation with various clay types, pigments, and firing temperatures.

The inherent variation in handcrafted bricks and wool as a material contributes to the overall complexity and uniqueness of both the brick floor and handwoven textiles.
